The Old Photograph

A photo in the attic reunites two friends after forty years.

While cleaning the attic, Daniel came across an old box full of photographs. Most of them were of people he did not know. But one photo made him stop.

It showed a young woman on a beach, laughing. She wore a summer dress, and the wind was in her hair. On the back, someone had written a single word: "Marina."

Daniel took the photo to his grandmother. "Who is this?" he asked. His grandmother put on her glasses and looked at it for a long time. Her face changed. "That is Marina," she said softly. "She was my best friend, many years ago."

She sat down and began to talk. She told Daniel about the summers they spent together when they were young. They swam in the sea, they danced, they shared every secret. "We promised to be friends forever," she said.

"What happened?" asked Daniel. His grandmother was quiet for a moment. "Life happened," she said. "Marina moved to another country. We wrote letters for a while, and then we stopped. I do not know why. It just happened, little by little."

Daniel looked at the happy young woman in the photo. It was strange to think that his grandmother had once been that young too, with a whole life in front of her.

That night, Daniel could not sleep. The next morning, he searched for Marina's name on his computer. It took some time, but he found her. She was old now, like his grandmother, and she lived in a city by the sea.

Daniel wrote her a short message and sent the old photograph with it. Three days later, an answer came. "I have looked for your grandmother for forty years," Marina wrote. "Please, tell her to call me."

When Daniel gave his grandmother the news, she cried. But she was smiling too. That afternoon, for the first time in decades, two old friends heard each other's voices again.
