Grandfather's Boat

A summer by the sea, fixing an old boat together.

Every summer, Lucas visited his grandfather by the sea. His grandfather lived in a small blue house near the beach. Behind the house, there was an old boat. The boat was broken, and its wood was gray and dry.

One morning, his grandfather said, "Let's fix the boat together." Lucas was happy. They worked every day. They cleaned the wood, they painted it white, and they closed the small holes. It was hard work, but Lucas liked it.

His grandfather taught him many things. He taught him how to tie a rope, how to read the wind, and how to look after the boat. Sometimes they stopped and drank cold water. His grandfather told stories about the sea and the fish he caught when he was young.

After three weeks, the boat was ready. It looked beautiful again. Early in the morning, they set off together. The sea was calm, and the sun was warm. Lucas held the rope and smiled.

"You did this," his grandfather said. "Now the boat is yours too." Lucas looked at the blue water and felt proud. He knew he would remember this summer for the rest of his life.
